Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) vs Oakley Meta HSTN
These two are close relatives in different frames. Both come from Meta and EssilorLuxottica, both have a 12MP camera that records 3K, open-ear speakers, five microphones, IPX4 splash resistance and the Meta AI app, and Meta rates both at 8 hours of typical use. The choice is mostly about the frame: Ray-Ban's Wayfarer, Skyler and Headliner shapes against Oakley's single HSTN design. US prices start close together at $379 and $399, and both take prescriptions from -12.00 to +6.00. Prescription orders work the same way for both: choose Rx lenses at purchase or go through an optician.
Short answer
Decide on fit and style. If the HSTN shape suits you, it gives you the same core features as Gen 2 for slightly more money. If you want a choice of three frame shapes, or you shop in a country where only Ray-Ban Meta is listed, Gen 2 is the simpler choice. Neither is Meta's sports model: for running and cycling in the rain, look at the IP67-rated Oakley Meta Vanguard.
Choose Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) if
Choose Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 if you prefer a classic Ray-Ban shape and want three to pick from, or if you shop in Brazil, where Gen 2 is listed and HSTN is not. Meta's announcement also spells out more video modes: 3K at 30fps, 1080p at 60fps and 720p at 120fps.
Choose Oakley Meta HSTN if
Choose Oakley Meta HSTN if you prefer Oakley's HSTN frame to Ray-Ban's shapes. Oakley lists 19 hours of standby, a case that recharges itself in 3.5 hours, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, and the same -12.00 to +6.00 prescription range, chosen at purchase on Oakley.com or Meta.com or through opticians.
