What is Android XR? Google's platform for glasses
Android XR is Google's software platform for headsets and glasses, with the Gemini assistant at its center. Google builds the software and works with hardware partners, chiefly Samsung, plus eyewear brands that design the frames. So far one Android XR device is on sale, and it is a headset, not glasses. Glasses are announced but not shipping. This guide separates what Google and its partners have announced from what press has reported, so you know what you could buy today and what is still a plan.
What Android XR is
Google announced Android XR glasses at I/O 2025, with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker as frame partners and Kering Eyewear to follow, and Samsung as the hardware and reference platform partner. At I/O 2026 Google said audio glasses would launch first, this fall, and pair with both Android and iOS phones, with display glasses later. Its developer kit now splits glasses into those two categories: audio glasses and display glasses. The common thread is Gemini, which answers questions and can use the camera on models that have one. See the Android XR brand page.
What you can buy today
Only Samsung Galaxy XR, a mixed-reality headset that went on sale on 21 Oct 2025. Google's Android XR help says it is currently available only in South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States. It is a face-covering headset of 545 g with an external battery pack rated around 2 hours of general use. It is not something you wear down the street. If you came here looking for glasses you can buy now, Android XR does not have any yet; Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta are the obvious alternatives.
The glasses that are announced
Samsung's Intelligent Eyewear comes in Gentle Monster and Warby Parker versions, announced on 19 May 2026. These are audio glasses: a camera, speakers and microphones, no display. Samsung quotes up to 9 hours per charge and a case with up to seven more full charges. Google and Samsung said this fall in select markets; the Korea Herald reports a Samsung official confirmed a November 2026 launch. Price has not been announced. The comparison with Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 shows the gaps in the published specs.
Display glasses and other partners
Android XR display glasses are announced without a date. Android Authority reported that Google strongly implied none reach stores before 2027, and leaks of a Samsung model with an in-lens display are rumor only. Kering's CEO told Reuters that Gucci-branded glasses would probably launch in 2027. XREAL AURA, formerly Project Aura, is a wired Android XR device with a 70-degree field of view and a compute puck, planned for fall 2026 and not shipping as of early October. None of these has a confirmed price.
Who should wait for it
Waiting makes sense if you live in Google's ecosystem, prefer Gemini to Meta AI, or want glasses that work with a Galaxy Watch for gestures, which Samsung has described. It makes less sense if you need glasses now, need a published prescription range, or want proven availability outside the US and Korea. Until reviews and prices exist, treat every Android XR glasses spec as provisional and check each device page for its status. By contrast, Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) is sold in 29 countries with a published prescription range, which is a lot of certainty to give up.
