What does the capture light on Meta glasses do?

The capture light is a small white LED on the front of the frame. It blinks briefly for a photo and keeps blinking while you record or go live, so people nearby know the camera is capturing. Meta says the camera is disabled if the light is blocked.

Meta describes it as an outward-facing signal for other people, not for you. Its help center says the capture LED "lets others know when you use your glasses to take photos and record videos for your gallery or streaming." Oakley adds that it also lights when the glasses are first turning on. Meta's wording differs slightly between pages: the help center says it stays on while recording, the newsroom says it continues to blink.

It is tied to saving footage. Meta says that on newer models the light does not come on for camera-based AI requests that are not saved to your gallery, such as asking what plant you are looking at. Meta also mentions a shutter sound, but that one is meant for the wearer and is not loud enough to warn anyone across a room.

Meta's rule on covering it is simple. If the glasses detect that the LED has been blocked or physically tampered with, the camera is automatically disabled, and if the light is covered you are told to clear it before a photo, video or livestream. The light is part of how the camera is allowed to work. We do not publish ways around it.

The light only helps if people know what it means, and many do not. Tell the people around you when you start recording, ask before filming anyone up close, and stop when asked. Take the glasses off, or switch them off, in restrooms, locker rooms, clinics and anywhere that bans cameras. More on this in our recording etiquette guide.

Related questions

Is the white light on the front a camera?

No. It is an LED that signals capture. The camera sits next to it, and the light comes on when the camera records to your gallery or streams.

Can the capture light be turned off in settings?

The official pages we read describe no setting to turn it off. Meta says the camera is automatically disabled if the glasses detect the LED is blocked or tampered with.

Does the light come on when I ask Meta AI about something I see?

On newer models, Meta says it does not, as long as the image is not saved to your gallery. It does light for any photo, video or livestream you capture.
